Pam Cox

Pam Cox studied Illustration and Design at St. Martin’s School of Art and The Royal College of Art, London. She considered myself fortunate in having tutors and fellow-students who were the best of that particular era. She worked freelance for various periodicals, including Conde Nast Publications, writing and illustrating features and articles.

When moving to Gloucestershire she was persuaded to teach and became involved with Art education, teaching at local schools, Cheltenham Ladies’ College and in further education. At this time she became more aware of painting and experimentation with various media. She organised exhibitions in the area and in my own gallery. Her paintings can be seen in private and public collections throughout the world.

A late beginner, she was invited to try writing poetry by a friend who introduced me to well-established poets. From that point she became a founder-member of the Cherington Group of poets, she joined Holub, and the Poetry Society of Cheltenham where she was elected chairperson from 2000 to 2004.

Pam says "Sometimes, I find myself treating a poem in a dramatic way, like a painting. I use words objectively to evoke mood, atmosphere and perhaps to record a past moment of experience."

A prizewinner in several competitions, she enjoys reading her work in arts centres and festivals. Her poems have been published in two national, and numerous local, anthologies. Her work invites a personal response and, says Pam "for me it is similar to painting, using different layers of ideas to explore the truth, whether real or imaginary."
